My Promotional Media

Even though I have already handed this module in at University I have decided to show some of the elements I included in it on here.
The images you see here consist of my business cards, my bag design and some handmade cards, which are only a few of the things I included in my portfolio for that module. I hope these will help me promote myself and get further in the world of illustration.

What I am handing in.........

For my Final Major Project I have few elements which I am handing in to be assessed, the first of which is a leather bound photo album which contains photo research taken at Witley Court and information I have found out about certain parts of the buildings. The next thing is my on site sketch book which I took with me on my visits to the ruin and contains the majority of my onsite sketches and drawings. The third thing is my development sketchbook which shows the mediums, experiments, onsite sketches and thoughts I went through to get to my final pieces. I am including two portfolios, one of which contains the A3 pastel drawing experiments I produced, the other contains my final A2 pieces.

Reflection

When looking back at all the work I have produced for my final major project I am pleased with the direction it has taken. When first starting I would not have dreamed my final pieces would look the way they do. I feel that branching out into a new nedia which I have not used before has proved very beneficial to both my creative practice and my final outcomes. I feel as though part of myself comes across in my fianl images, showing how I myself see Witley Court.
I do not feel I would change anything about the processes I went through to get to my final outcomes. The pen sketches, water colour drawings etc, had to be pursued to get to where I ended up in the project.
Overall I can safely say I am very happy with the outcome of my project and feel I have done Witley Court justice.

My Final Pieces

After producing my experiments in pastels and getting more comfortable with the media I have produced my final pieces. To get the layouts of the images I first compiled a few layout sketches on how they could be and what I remebered Witley Court to be like, then to geet the layouts accurate I went back to Witley Court and took some photos of certain points in the ruin that I felt matched the layouts that I was trying to achieve.
The actual size of each pastel drawing is A2. I tried to capture two moods of Witley Court which I feel I did : the red earthy drawings represent one mood and the dark grey drawings represent another. The red drawings depict more of a derelict shell of a building which is technically what the ruin now is. The dark grey drawings represent more the drama and mystery that is sensed when visiting the building.

Pastel Experiments

Having not worked with pastels before I found it quite difficult to control the medium to get it to act how i wanted it to. After practice however I feel I have progressed and hopefully you can see this in my experiments, the most recent being at the top of this post.
I feel this medium is more suited to the subject matter of Witley Court as a grainy, brick like texture is produced.

More pastel development drawings

These drawings are more experiments I produced in pastel. In these I feel it can be seen that I am more comfortable with the medium and am working well with it. The pastels tend to bring the subject of Witley Court to life and cause the images to appear dramatic and in a way overbearing which the buliding certainly is.

New Outcome plan.....

After visiting Witley Court a number of times and having tutorials I have decided that using a pastel medium is the way forward as this will create texture in the drawings like I was trying to produce with the rubbings. Now instead of producing a book for the final outcome I plan to produce 4 large drawings in colour which depict the atmosphere, drama and the different moods that the ruin creates. I will produce some pastel experiments first to aquainte myself with the medium and get used to drawing with it. When looking at the images together an overall feel and impression of the building will be given.

Close ups

Change in Direction

After visiting Witley Court again I have decided that instead of drawing actual elements of the ruin such as the different rooms, the pillars etc, I am going to persue an alternative route to my "guidebook". I am instead going to look up close at Witley Court, right up to the brickwork.
Things I will consider will be the black space that has been created by the fire and it will be treated more like a ruin.

The book will provide a walk through account of my portrayal of Witley Court and how I see it myself.
At this point I do not plan to include any text as I want the images and illustrations to speak for themselves.
I will use a carefully chosencolour palette so the collective images will create an overall image of the ruin when looked at one.
I am aiming to produce at least 50-60 images before the end of easter, so I will be uploading alot of work in the next few days and weeks :)

Experiments with rubbings

From the rubbings I took at Witley Court I have produced these experiments using both pen and photocopies of the rubbings.

Rubbings done at Witley Court

During this visit to Witley Court I concentrated on taking rubbings of the stone work, patterns, floor tiles etc. I plan to experiment with these in my work as these will bring an actual element of the ruin to the drawings. The above are just two of the many rubbings I took.

Initial Witley Court Drawings

These are my first initial drawings for my Final Major Project. After a tutorial I am going to try to make my frawings less detailed and more free. After all the drawings are supposed to be about Witley Court not of it.

Final Major Project =]

The Final Major Project is finally upon us at Hereford College of Arts.
After a very positive meeting today I'm feeling very excited about getting started :)

My propsal for the project is as follows:

The aim of this project is to produce a completed history/imformation book surrounding the subject of Witley Court in Worcestershire. The book will be similar to the structure of the Spiderwick Chronicles source book, for example stidies will be made of the lants that grow in the grounds, details of the architecture will be drawn upon.
This will inculde in depth research into the history of the estate and the surroundings, e.g owners of the house, events. I plan to use a variety of media within the project including etching.

So thats a outline of my proposal and I cant wait to get started :)

Below is a photo taken by myself of the burnt out ruined mansion which for me holds so much beauty.
